Fuel Cell Protection

Cathode air intake may contain contaminants such as sulfur oxides (SO2, SO3) and carbon monoxide (CO) that can poison the electrocatalyst. These impurities are of particular importance in transportation systems where nearby combustion engines release contaminants harmful to the fuel cells. The SulfaTrap™-SO is a unique sorbent/catalyst blend that can achieve deep purification of cathode air intake. The SulfaTrap™-SO is available as pellets, granules or in honeycomb structure engineered to minimize pressure drop. In addition to the sulfur sorbent, this material uses an ambient temperature catalyst to oxidize CO, formaldehyde and other volatile organic compounds (VOCs) to CO2 to provide protection to the Polymer Electrolyte Membrane (PEM) fuel cells.
